CLOSED CAPTIONING SCHOOLS
VOICE CAPTIONING AND VOICE RECOGNITION

Secure Your Future

Professionally Trained Closed Captioners are in Huge Demand.

The National Court Reporters Association projects over 5000 new Captioning and Realtime jobs over the next 5 years.

By 2018 a critical shortfall is projected in all realtime careers.

Closed Captioners have lifetime job security, 6 figure income potential, and most Captioners WORK FROM HOME.

Watch the video below and learn how you can enter this career whether you are a new student or transitioning court reporter.

The cost of captioning school is dependent on the type of school you enter. The most common schools are proprietary or for profit schools.

Surveys indicate that most of these schools' court reporting programs range from about $11,500 to $14,000 per year, with total tuition costs exceeding $35,000 to $55,000!

Check with the school to be sure comprehensive captioning training is included in the tuition. If not, there can be a substantial additional cost to acquire  this portion of your training.

Community colleges are substantially less expensive than proprietary schools, but you need to be certain the program is geared for both realtime court reporting and broadcast closed captioning.

The Court Reporting and Captioning at Home distance education program is a fraction of the cost of traditional captioning training,  and all support is provided by credentialed professionals, with extensive experience in closed captioning and realtime writing .

HOW LONG IS CLOSED CAPTIONING SCHOOL?

The following video, developed by the Leader in Captioning and CART Providing Education, graphically illustrates how closed captioners write on the steno machine.

These full studio produced animated graphic video tutorials, like the one in this video developed by Court Reporting and Captioning at Home, are a milestone in realtime education, and have made learning closed captioning easier and faster!

CLOSED CAPTIONING SALARIES
Independent surveys indicate starting salaries for full-time broadcast closed captioning careers range from $70,000 to $80,000 per year.

Broadcast closed captioners with just a few years' experience can expect to earn $100,000 or more. The National Court Reporters Association reports incomes for captioners ranging from $50.00 to $75.00 per hour.

There is a shortage of qualified closed captioners in the U.S., and these specially trained realtime machine writers are highly sought after by national captioning companies.  The incomes for broadcast closed captioners are comparable to realtime court reporting salaries, which can exceed $100,000 per year.

In addition to full time positions, there are many part-time and temporary positions available for captioners, which are paid hourly.

National captioning companies may offer all the benefits that are available from any large corporation such as retirement, health insurance, vacation time, sick leave, etc.

"I was honored when I was asked to caption Super Bowl 50 at Levis Stadium!  Words cannot describe the excitement and proud feelings rushing through my mind and body as I prepared for the big day!"

Karen F., Court Reporting and Captioning at Home Graduate and Professional Realtime Captioner.

THE LEADER IN BROADCAST CLOSED CAPTIONING TRAINING!

Broadcast Closed Captioning is a career in  demand.  The following is a partial list of Captioning Companies that provide jobs for online captioners.  There are at least this many more captioning companies and many independent captioners not listed here.  The National Court Reporters Association maintains a list of independent captioners.

Additionally, there are many more offline captioning and subtitling companies that generate subtitles both with a computer or a steno machine.  These companies are not listed here.

This image is seen by millions of television viewers each day, but most of them are not aware that a realtime steno machine reporter, with closed captioning training, is captioning the live program as it is broadcast!

According to the Ducker Report commisioned by the National Court Reporters Association and other independent studies, Voice Captioning is less than 2% of the captioning industry and is used mainly for lower paying phone captioning jobs.

Voice Recognition software is extremely limited in its use for several reasons, such as its inability to designate speakers and low quality translation rate.

Closed Captioning jobs and salaries

CLOSED CAPTIONING JOBS AND CLOSED CAPTIONING COMPANIES

Online captioning is live programming.  Though there is less live programming, this type of captioning is substantially more lucrative than offline captioning and is the preferred choice of steno machine-trained closed captioners.

With offline captioning, or previously recorded programs, the captioner writes the program on the steno machine or computer keyboard, and merges it into offline captioning software that places the words exactly where they should be according to the time stamp from the steno notes. This is usually a very slow and tedious process.

Many captioning companies employ captioners for both online and offline captioning.  The salary is considerably less for offline captioning.

For detailed information about the difference between offline captioning and online captioning, send your questions to info@courtreportingathome.com

Closed Captioning training is similar to court reporting training.  A quality realtime training program, with a state of the art realtime theory, is essential.

Though most court reporting schools offer closed captioning, ONLY one program, the Court Reporting and Captioning at Home online program, has a theory with both a realtime court reporting and a captioning foundation.  The Court Reporting and Captioning at Home program simultaneously teaches the student all the realtime writing careers, consisting of Closed Captioning, Realtime Court Reporting, and CART Providing.

Theory is the foundation of captioning training, and most theories are not sufficient to enter the captioning field without additional realtime training.  For detailed information about the trendsetting, NCRA-approved Realtime Reporting and Captioning Theory, taught exclusively by Court Reporting and Captioning at Home, CLICK HERE.

The National Court Reporters Association in conjunction with Ducker Worldwide projects there will be over 5000 new job openings over the next 5 years in all the realtime careers, including Broadcast Closed Captioning and CART Providing!  According to the Ducker Worldwide Report, anyone in these careers today or anyone entering these careers will have lifetime job security!

Most live programs are required to be closed captioned by the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Most of us think of national news and sports when we think of realtime captioning, but local news programs must be captioned as well.  Most small cities and towns have their own news channels, as well as many other local programs.  A captioner does not  have to live in the city or town where the program is broadcast because of the special software that allows them to work from home and caption programs broadcast from anywhere in the country.

Also, city government, county government, town hall meetings, school board meetings, etc. are live programming and by law must be captioned.

Live entertainment, such as talk shows, must be captioned, as well as political conventions, congressional hearings, and religious services.

In summary, there are literally thousands of live television broadcasts, and stenographic machine realtime writers are the preferred method of captioning these programs.

Webcasting now falls under the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Webcasting is anything written directly to a website.  It is a whole new branch of captioning, and it is growing daily.  From concerts to YouTube, captioning is in demand.

When we have national emergencies such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or any emergency requiring a swift response, thanks to broadcast closed captioners using their realtime captioning training, like that learned with the Court Reporting and Captioning at Home program, the 28 million hearing impaired people in the United States now have equal access to this critical information.

The demand is tremendous for stenographic machine captioners and will continue to increase with the addition of more programming and cable networks.

In summary, captioning will remain a high growth profession with a lucrative income for the foreseeable future.  According to the Ducker Group study commissioned by the NCRA, anyone in this career now or anyone entering this career will have lifetime job security.

WHAT IS THE DEMAND FOR CLOSED CAPTIONERS?
COURT REPORTERS TRANSITIONING TO CAPTIONING
If you are a court reporter wishing to transition to broadcast closed captioning, Court Reporting and Captioning at Home has the most advanced and efficient method to do this with its three realtime programs for current court reporters.  Become realtime proficient, or transition to captioning or CART Providing with our NCRA-approved realtime writing programs.  In addition, when you complete any of the CRAH realtime writing programs, you earn continuing education credits (CEU's) from the National Court Reporters Association.

HOW MUCH IS CLOSED CAPTIONING SCHOOL?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ONLINE AND OFFLINE CAPTIONING?

Most court reporting schools base their programs on 24 months.  Check with the school to verify if this includes comprehensive captioning training.

Though court reporting schools are often based on 24 months, statistics indicate completion averages are closer to 36 to 48 months and most do not include captioning training in the basic program.
